ABOUT DO UNTO OTHERS
Here at Do Unto Others, we see the value in everyone. We want to be a catalyst for positive change and since our beginnings, we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Organization upon: support, empowerment and progress. Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Do Unto Others emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words.
Our values are the foundation of our work with the people we support, their families, our volunteers/employees, funders, community partners and other stakeholders. Our core values include: Showing Respect by advancing the dignity and uniqueness of all persons. Championing Choice by supporting the right of all persons to make informed choices.· Working with Integrity by valuing truthful, accountable and ethical interactions. Fostering Teamwork by reinforcing the synergy that comes from all of us working safely together. Emphasizing Continuous Learning by sharing knowledge and enabling personal growth. Do Unto Others (DUO) started as a grassroots volunteer organization that organizes the collection and distribution of supplies to the homeless directly. Our volunteers visited homeless on the streets or in encampments throughout the region, providing non-judgmental and compassionate support to those most vulnerable in our community. By teaming with other members of the local community, we're able to provide over-lapping coverage and care throughout this most vulnerable sector. Originally DUO first operated as a nightly mobile operation out of a van, then as a warming centre. As a source of community care, a list of contacts considered to be community partners is maintained and the Creative Director, Melissa Schneider has maintained connections with DRPS, shelters, food and furniture banks, by-law, as well as being the Emergency Contact for many individuals that DUO has built relationships with. As the Emergency Contact, calls have been placer by hospitals, mental health services, lawyers, jails as well as some family members.
